Thanks for your help - The Mayor and Council have allocated some money for Sundays in the Fall
Mayor Tedeschi and council members unanimously allocated $8,000 to the library for the purpose of restoring some Sunday hours in the fall.  Plans are to offer 3 hours of Sunday afternoon service from October through December.  Thanks to everyone who expressed how important libraries, and especially Sunday service, are to them.
Cuts to Our Library Funding
Due to the crisis in municipal funding, the Fair Lawn Borough Council has asked the library to contribute to the solution by cutting the library 2010 budget request by $376,812.  It is impossible to achieve this without a reduction in library service, hours and materials. The following steps will be taken:
Effective July 1, 2010 the library will close on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
• Effective September 1, 2010, on Fridays the entire library staff will be on unpaid furlough and the library will be closed every Friday until the end of the calendar year.
• Regrettably our materials budget will also be severely cut.  This will mean the purchase of books, DVDs, CDs and other material will be reduced greatly for the remainder of 2010.
The Trustees and Administration regret having to make such reductions in our services.  It is our plan to resume Friday service in 2011.  We hope some or all of the other reductions may be restored then as well, but with the current uncertainty in funding it is impossible to predict the future.
We deeply regret the inconvenience this will cause.
FAQ - What about delivery?  - Delivery is funded with state monies.  The 2010-11 NJ budget was approved with some funding for public libraries restored, thanks to lots of people advocating.  So delivery should continue unchanged through the end of the year.

Gov. Christie signed the modified 2010-2011 budget. This budget includes restoration of the NJ Network funding of $ 4.299 million and funding for the state library at last year's level. While we have lost significant funding this year, this restoration is clearly the result of the advocacy efforts of the library community and the residents of New Jersey who communicated their need for the services libraries provide.   We thank all of our library champions from across the state who worked tirelessly on this issue.

We Celebrated the Library's 75th Anniversary with an Open House on May 4, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
75 years ago a spirited group headed by Dr. Maurice M. Pine started the library with a small collection of books in a room next to his office.  The following year the Mayor and Council provided a room in the Municipal Building and, in 1944, the library came under municipal control.  Since then the library has grown, supported by Fair Lawn citizens, to become one of the best in the county.
On Sunday, May 4, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. we had a wonderful celebration with entertainment, refreshments, presentations about the library, chances to win gift baskets, and children's activities. The library was mobbed and everyone had a great time.  We couldn't have a better community!  Thanks to all who volunteered, staff members, Friends of the Library, members of the press, and everyone who came to share our celebration.  Click to see lots of photos on a remote site.
Please visit the library's 75th Anniversary website designed by staff member Mary Kirsch.  You'll find lots of interesting facts and pictures about our library's history.
